Subphrenic Abscess



Abstract
We studid 38 cases of subphrenic abscess, treated surgically 7 years duration from 1.1 1964. to 1.1
1971 rat S.N.U.H., and reviewed on literature briefly.
1. Sex ratio male to female 2.2:1, average age was 29.9, Prevalent age was 3rd & 4th decades,
2. Chief primary diseases of subphrenic abscess was as following, stomach origin; 34.2%, liver
biliary origin; 18.4%, appendix origin; 23.6%, others; 23.6%.
3. Twenty six of 38 cases was cause of operation, the other, was non operative causes.
4. The sites of subphrenic abscess was predominantly right side, (63%), Left side was 23.6%,
bilateral involvement was 13.4%, which was more frequent than reported on literature.
5. Most predominant site was Rt. supra hepatic (31.5%).
6. Average duration of admission was 49 days and average days of post-operative diagnosis was 16 days.
7. We treated all case surgically. Transperitoneal approach was 52.6%, tranpleural 15.8% Anterior
extraserous 10.5% posy extraserous; 15.8%.
8. Mortality rate was, relatively low. Only 3 cases of 38 cases was expired, one, by multiple liver
pabscess perforation, one; subphrenic abscess after multiple licer laceration, the other one was post ap
endectomy case which was operated non perg operative appendectomy complication and intraabdominal
hematoma.
We presented 38 cases of subphrenic abscess and reviewed briefly on literature.
